Before you take command
A captain keeps checking the assumptions behind a plan. If a forecast changes, a return takes longer, or equipment is unreliable, the plan may need to change too. Preserving options and communicating clearly are part of a successful watch.
- 1.Observe
- 2.Identify the hazard
- 3.Check what is missing
- 4.Choose a plan
- 5.Communicate
- 6.Reassess
Worked example: 3 NM at 6 knots takes 30 minutes each way. Add the return and any stop before deciding whether the plan has enough margin.
